When pantries were first used hundreds of years ago, they were bread stores. The term “pantry” is derived from the French word “pain,” which means “bread.” A traditional pantry may also include a stone shelf, known as a “thrawl,” which serves as a larder to keep food cool.
Pantries became more popular for storing tableware over time, while food was kept in rooms simply referred to as “storerooms.”
Pantries have seen a resurgence in popularity in recent years, and they are typically used to stock storecupboard foods that do not perish.
